Pint of Science is an international science festival which takes place annually throughout the UK and other countries. Scientists (of any type) present and discuss their latest research in a relaxed environment over a pint, at local pubs, exactly as the name suggests.
C1net member and SBRC PhD student Florence Annan presented at one of the events on the 16th May at the Rough Trade in Nottingham, her talk was titled ‘Using bacteria to make jet fuel out of greenhouse gasses’
Florence Jessica Annan is a PhD student at the University Of Nottingham and works as part of the Synthetic Biology Research Centre. Her PhD involves trying to trick bacteria into making as much jet fuel and ethanol as possible out of some greenhouse gases and feeding them as little as she can. She does this by messing around with their genetics, and changing their diet, which changes what useful stuff they make.

“What happens when science meets society and how do mutual (mis)understanding emerge? To answer these questions, it’s important to examine how the media discuss science and how they shape perception and understanding of scientific issues. This process is often called ‘framing’ by social and linguistic scientists. I’ll talk about how genetics, genomics and synthetic biology are being framed by scientists and the media, and what ethical implications such framing may have”.
